Marc-Aurèle Fortin - The Experience of Colour at Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec - Beginning on February 10

Marc-Aurèle Fortin
The Experience of Colour

February 10 to May 8, 2011

After Suzor-Coté and Clarence Gagnon, Marc-Aurèle Fortin takes the spotlight to complete the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec's trio of major exhibitions on the foremost figures of modern Quebec painting.

Marc-Aurèle Fortin: The Experience of Colour, the first museum retrospective devoted to this artist in 45 years, features a hundred or so paintings, prints and drawings produced over four decades, between 1909 and 1949.

Fortin indelibly marked the Quebec imagination with the compositions of stately elms, colourful rural scenes and landscapes for which he is best known. His views of île d'Orléans and the Charlevoix, Gaspé and Saguenay regions convey the immutable nature of the Quebec countryside. The exhibition also presents a lesser-known but equally important aspect of his work: cityscapes. These urban views prove him a keen observer of the irreversible changes that modernity was bringing to Montreal in the 1920s and 30s.

The exhibition Marc-Aurèle Fortin: The Experience of Colour is accompanied by a catalogue that sheds new light on the man, the artist and his involvement in Quebec's art community.
